Originally, Alun-Alun Kidul was a sandy land with two Banyan Trees in its middle side. The east Banyan tree is called “Ringin Wok” and the west Banyan tree is called “Ringin Jebres”.
Siti Hinggil Kidul used to be a “tratag” or canopy building for Sultan’s place when watching Keraton soldier training.
JOGJA MONUMENT
Jogja Monument, which was built by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, used to have a peak in a round shape (Golong) and a pole in a tube form (Gilig) and was usually called Golong-Gilig Monument.
The meaning of Golong-Gilig itself is the unity of citizen, the King, and God. The height of the monument was 25 meters and was used as Sultan’s focus point when he meditated in Manguntur Tangkil Ward in Sitihinggil. If related to the existence of Panggung Krapyak (Yoni) in the South side of Jogja, this monument was a symbol of men (Lingga).
KERATON YOGYAKARTA
After passed Alun-alun, there are some building which have special meaning in Keraton Yogyakarta Complex. The palace is as a symbol of a comeback place where a grown-up person back to the Creator in the eternal life.
In the concept of Paraning Dumadi, there are only several certain buildings which are on the list of the concept, such as Bangsal Sri Manganti, Bangsal Trajumas, and Bangsal Kencana also Gedhong Prabayekso.
MALIOBORO
Maliabara was derived from the word Malia which means “Be like Wali” and Bara from the word Ngumbara which means “wandering”. Etymologically, Malibara told us to become like Wali and wander to spread the goodwill.
The right and left side of the road is decorated with Gayam Tree and Asam Tree like in Margamulya street.
PANGGUNG KRAPYAK
Panggung Krapyak is the initial part of the three philosophical axis arrangement. Krapyak's stage depicts a woman who in the Hindu tradition is called Yoni. Sultan Hamengku Buwono engaged Islamic and Hinduism which existed long time before Islam has existed in Java.
It is aimed to preserve traditions which link to the royal era of Hinduism in East Java (Majapahit). It can be assumed that this was Sultan Hamengku Buwono’s effort to strengthen his legitimacy as the leader of Yogyakarta whose power is rooted to the Kingdom of Majapahit.
PLENGKUNG GADING
Plengkung Nirbaya or better known as Plengkung Gading is plengkung Pungkuran (the back side) of Sultan Palace of Yogyakarta. The building with the arched door holds sacred rules which must be obeyed by the society, Sultan’s relatives, as well as Sultan himself.
Based on the ritual, Plengkung Nirbaya is the last door passed by Sultan, when was carried to Pasareyan Imogiri left the palace.
